Just as the Mass is about community, joining a ministry is about joining the community. You meet new people and work to achieve a common goal for the benefit of your parish community and beyond.
Jesus has put before us two extremes: those who give out of their surplus and those who give their last penny. I expect most of us fall in between these two but much closer to the former than the latter. So here’s a test for us while contemplating our Stewardship pledge for next year: Are you ever tempted to cut your pledge?
One of the biggest struggles my husband and I had when we lived in Alabama for those 15 years was finding a church that fit. Have you ever been in a position like that? We got more stares than smiles, felt cold and uninviting. I didn’t really like the culture. Sometimes we went for the kids, other times we went because we should, but we just weren’t getting fed…and eventually we stopped going. And then, when my husband, Sam, and I moved back to Seattle, we felt displaced. To help ground us, Sam and I wanted to find a church that felt right. We tried several churches around our downtown neighborhood, but they just weren’t a fit; I felt awkward and uneasy. Then, I had an idea…why don’t we go back to St. Therese, which we had attended some prior to moving. We were welcomed with open arms!
