SOLOMON TO THE LORD GOD, 1 KINGS 3:9

I have a New American Bible, revised, that translates this passage with “a listening heart.”  I have also seen this translated as “an understanding mind.” Heart vs mind and understanding vs listening. Apparently this phrase is not easy to translate! “Heart” seems to carry the notion of compassion better but understanding vs listening is difficult. In the end it seems to me that it is hard to understand without listening. Jesus seemed to feel that one could not understand without listening, “those who have ears to hear, let them hear!” I have certainly found that my relationships have been better when I have quieted myself and chosen to listen to the other. In our country today, we have certainly had entirely too much loud proclamation of belief and not enough listening.
