Happy Feast of the Epiphany!
Joseph and Mary are relaxing with their baby when suddenly there is a knock on the door and three exotic strangers enter bearing gold and frankincense and myrrh and announce that they have been following their baby’s star from the east and have come to worship him, the King of the Jews. This might have filled them with astonishment, though after angelic visits and awe-struck shepherds, perhaps nothing much surprises them. But it must certainly have filled them with terror, for they would have known that Herod would not be pleased, and indeed, thirty years later, the Jewish religious authorities would persuade the Roman administrator to execute him on precisely that charge.
But searching diligently for the child is what we are called to do as Christians. Let us take time to be quiet and pray and search our hearts for the Christ child.
The Magi found the child by giving of their time and talents. They brought extravagant gifts. As you can see from the numbers below, we are falling short of our budget. Please follow the example of the Magi and be extra generous!
