Oh, my. The story of The Fall. St Augustine says that evil arises from choosing the lesser good. The tree offered food, beauty, wisdom but it wasn’t the will of God that the fruit should be eaten.
“She also gave some to her husband, who was with her.” Huh? Really? How long has he been standing there??? All through the serpent’s speech? All the while she pondered the fruit, reached out her hand, plucked it and ate it? Certainly a passive participant in this joint sin. Not clever enough to ponder. Not assertive enough to object. Just went along with the deed. Clearly the original sin involved both doing and failing to do.
Sin can be really hard to avoid. I think most of us sin in putting the entertainment of ourselves above relieving the suffering of others. When we do our budgets, let’s try budgeting our generosity first and our entertainment last.
This is the second week of your Stewardship Commission’s Welcome Counter! The counter has the Annual Report, ministry information, registration forms and much, much more. We are looking for hosts! You really do not need to have intimate knowledge of all parish programs. You just need to welcome people and show what literature is available. If you are interested in helping, please contact John Russell at jvrussell85@gmail.com.
