You are Christ’s body, and individually parts of it.
St. Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians 12:12
Happy Third Sunday of Ordinary Time!
I found it hard to pick out a summary section in today’s reading from St. Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians about the Body of Christ. He makes three important points in his reflection: (1) each one of us is a part of the Body of Christ, (2) no part deserves more prestige than another, (3) the body doesn’t work as well if one part of the body suffers.
There is a famous quote attributed to St. Teresa of Avila which expands on St. Paul’s image:
Christ has no body now but yours.
No hands, no feet on earth but yours.
Yours are the eyes with which he looks with compassion on this world.
Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good.
Yours are the hands through which he blesses all the world.
Yours are the hands, yours are the feet, yours are the eyes, you are his body.
Christ has no body now on earth but yours.
