Thus says the LORD: Cursed is the one who trusts in human beings, who seeks their strength in flesh, whose heart turns away from the LORD. They are like a barren bush in the desert that enjoys no change of season, but stands in a lava waste, a salt and empty earth. Jeremiah 17:5-6
Happy Sixth Sunday of Ordinary Time!
Every once in a while, I find myself in a meeting where people are pondering how do we evangelize? Who would be interested in our faith, in our church? In western Washington we live in a very secular society. How do we appeal to those who aren’t interested? Jeremiah says that a lack of faith is its own punishment. We need to minister to those who feel like they are living in a spiritual desert, whose lives have no change of season. We can find them in their addictions, in their self-help books, in their search for spirituality, in their failing marriages, in their seeking “mindfulness.” We can offer them a place of joy, a place to work for justice, and a place to find God’s love.
